Coronary heart disease

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the primary health risk associated with high cholesterol. As your cholesterol becomes too high, it begins to build up on the artery walls. This build up is referred to as plaque. As time goes by, this plaque can cause atherosclerosis, a hardening of the arteries. This health condition slows the flow of blood to the heart as the arteries become more narrow. This results in angina or a heart attack as the vessel becomes blocked completely.


When the supply of blood is reduced to part of the brain you can experience a stroke. This happens when a blood vessel becomes blocked or bursts, preventing the brain from obtaining the needed oxygen and nutrients. Without the blood and oxygen that the brain needs, it essentially begins to die.

Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes can affect the different cholesterol levels in your body. Because of this, Type 2 diabetes is yet another heart disease that has been associated with high cholesterol. Even when people with diabetes have good control over their blood sugar they often have decreased HDL, increased triglycerides and increased LDL. This can increase the chances of narrowing of the arteries.

High blood pressure

High cholesterol is also linked to high blood pressure. As your arteries become narrowed and hardened with cholesterol plaque and calcium, your heart needs to work harder in order to pump blood through them. This can cause your blood pressure to become higher than desired.
